The Story Of Hello, Dreamer And Turning Dreams Into A Game

So in this post, I’ll explain more of the story, gameplay, and current state of the game.

Hello, Dreamer starts with a message from Ella. She explains that  she is being held prisoner on the 80th floor of the Century Tower by an unknown entity. She says that if she is erased from your memory, there will be no more action figures in space. The message becomes distorted and fades away.

You wake up in your house, where Gabe gives you a quick tutorial on how to shoot forks. You then find a casette tape containing a message from Ella. She instructs you to watch your lucidity so the dream world remains stable while you are in it. After transmitting you a world map, you wake up in A Town, outside Burger Time Restaurant.

At this point, you can start exploring your dream. You’ll begin to notice that the environment behaves differently depending on how lucid you are. If you keep your lucidity up, everything is bright and vibrant; you move quickly and enemies are easy to defeat. As your lucidity decreases (or if you take damage), your dream becomes less stable; movement and attacks become slow, enemies are stronger, and the world begins to fade away. Lucidity can be restored by opening boxes and eating the food you find inside of them, although boxes can also contain enemies.

Pressing Tab (or Start on a controller) will pull up the world map. If you head towards the question mark, you’ll eventually run into your dad. He tells you the unknown entity is using the power generated from your fears to grow the Century Tower, and the only way to destroy it is to conquer your fears and seal the dungeons they occupy. He marks the locations of your fears on your map and restores your lucidity.

Throughout the game, you will unlock and explore various dungeons, which contain puzzles, nightmare scenarios, and a boss. When you complete a dungeon and conquer a fear, your maximum lucidity is increased. There are also a variety of “memories” and other items you can collect in separate side quests that will affect how the game ends.

Ah, yes, the old “Giant Chicken Pecking Me To Death” dream

So that’s basically the core story and gameplay. At the moment, the game is a little over 50% done. The overworld is finished, and completely explorable. This month, I’m finishing up building all of the dungeons. There are 10 in total. 6 are complete, 2 are fully built with bosses but lack puzzles, and the other 2 are still being constructed.

The game definitely needs more powerups. Currently, the only weapons are forks, and the only other powerup is Chuy, your dog sidekick that attacks enemies in your vicinity. I’m testing out a clock powerup that freezes time. I’ll be sure to update you on how that works out. Let me know in the comments if you have any powerup ideas or suggestions.
