I'm Making A Game!
Hi, I’m Johnny Rubix, and I’m developing a game!
A little backstory: I’m a DJ/producer from Tucson, Arizona. I’ve been involved with the music scene here and producing records for a little over 12 years. I’m self taught. I’m a big fan of classic video games, and I’ve always wanted to make my own. A little over a year ago, I started work on “Hello, Dreamer.” At the time, it was just a fun project for me to work on in my spare time to learn about games and programming.
About 3 months ago, I showed an early build of Hello, Dreamer to a couple friends. They enjoyed it enough to convince me to start working on the project full time. I was also able to get a couple of friends to help with art, music, and programming. I decided to start this blog to keep track of the progress, post updates, and get feedback from other game fans.
So, a little bit about Hello, Dreamer:
It’s basically “Why Can’t I Punch Hard In My Dreams: The Game.” The core mechanic is your lucidity. When it’s high, you move fast, enemies are weaker, and the world is bright and vibrant. When it’s low, you move slow, enemies are stronger, and the world begins to fade away. The overall goal of the game is to explore your dream world, overcome your fears, and rescue Ella from a parasitic tower being built inside your mind. Along the way, you’ll encounter people from your past, fight through a variety of strange nightmares, and use neat powerups. You even get a sweet dog as your sidekick. His name is Chuy, and he’s my actual dog (I sampled his voice for the bark effect).
Right now the game is around 50% done. I’m wrapping up the core story, and then I’ll be working with some friends on making sure the game is polished. Over the course of this blog, I’ll dive more into how the game is being made and keep you updated on progress. If you have any questions or things you’d like for me to cover in the next post, be sure to let me know in the comments. Thanks for stopping by!
